Description
Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's Future (Mustaqbal) Movement was proclaimed officially as a political party on July 25 this year amid mounting political tensions over a pending indictment by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. There are fears in Lebanon that if the UN-appointed STL, established to try suspects in Hariri's assassination, indicts some members of the Iranian-backed militant Shiite Hizbullah group in the assassination, this would lead to sectarian strife between Hizbullah's Shiite supporters and pro-government Sunni groups. Sectarian street fighting between Sunni and Shiite gunmen in Beirut and other areas in May 2008 left more than 100 people dead. In an opening speech at the Future Movement's two-day founding conference on July 25, Hariri sought to reassure worried Lebanese that there will be no sectarian strife. "There is no room in our dictionary for sectarian strife," he said. Turning to Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah and his allies who have warned that Lebanon would be destabilized if the STL indicted some Hizbullah members in Hariri's murder, Saad Hariri urged them to "stop intimidating and scaring the people." "[The thought that instability is imminent] is not true, even if some people wish it could happen or want it to happen," Hariri said.
