Description

Gwadar is situated on Makran Coast, close to the entrance of the Persian Gulf. During the homeward march of Alexander the great, his admiral, Nearchus, led a fleet along the modern-day Makran Coast. After the collapse of Alexander's empire the area was ruled by Seleueus Nicator, another Alexander's general. The region then came under "local rule" for some time till Muhammad Bin Qasim captured the town of Gwadar. Whereas the Portuguese captured, sacked and burnt Gwadar in 1581 and this was then followed by almost two centuries of local rule by various Balochi tribes. In 1783, the Khan of Kalat granted suzerainty over Gwadar to Taimur Sultan, the defeated ruler of Muscat. When the sultan subsequently retook Muscat, he was to continue his rule in Gwadar by appointing a Wali (Governor). Until 1958, Gwadar was part of Oman but was transferred/purchased by Pakistan on 8th September 1958. It was integrated with Balochistan on 1st July 1977 and became a full Sub-Division of Gwadar district. Gwadar is strategically located between three increasingly important regions: the oil-rich Middle East, heavily populated South Asia and economically emerging and resource-laden region of Central Asia. In view of the importance of area, Gwadar port project was conceived much earlier, but serious consideration was only given in 90s. Feasibility study for the development of a major deep water sea port at Gwadar was started in 1993, however, the port project commenced in March 2002. The construction activity completed in 2007 at a cost of US$288 millions. The Gwadar port is constructed in the sheltered waters at the foot hill of Jabal-e-Nuh (Ras Nuh), 120 km from Iranian border and 537 km from Karachi in the province of Balochistan. This deep water port is the third port of Pakistan constructed with following objectives:
